All of us want to have a confident smile, without any damaged or discoloured teeth. But sometimes, environmental factors, our bad eating habits, poor dental hygiene may result in significant damage to the teeth, thus lowering one's self esteem or self-confidence. People who have been drinking beverages for over a long period of time, or have been smoking regularly, start suffering from discoloration of teeth. So, they normally reach out for cosmetic dentistry procedures that improves their self-confidence, and the usual best solution to this are teeth veneers. Veneers are restorative materials, which are thin layers aimed to provide protection to the damaged teeth and improve the appearance. They are like crowns and are porcelain restorations, which encase or cover only one side of the tooth. This thin shell, or the teeth veneer may sometimes be made of plastic too. Teeth veneers are used to restore the tooth to its original look, by closing the spaces between teeth, and whitening the discoloured teeth, thus enhancing the aesthetics and granting you that confident smile.

All about teeth veneers

When you visit a dentist with your dental problems as these, such as discolouration, spacing between teeth, etc.,  the dentist will refer you to a prosthodontist, who is an expert in preserving the aesthetics, and beautification of your teeth. He works on restoring your teeth with artificial substitutes. Veneers usually take two to three dental appointments or sittings, for the procedure to be properly completed. Generally veneers are fixed by freezing (giving local anaesthetic) your teeth. The dentist removes a thin enamel from your teeth so that veneers fit in properly, then a mold of your teeth is done, to custom make your porcelain veneers. For the time-being till your porcelain veneers are ready, a temporary veneer is placed. Once, your permanent porcelain teeth veneers are ready, then the dentist removes the temporary veneers, and puts in a mild chemical to make your veneers rough and strong. Your teeth are cleaned and polished before fitting in the veneer. Then one after the other, the porcelain veneers are glued to your teeth using a resin cement. Finally, the excess cement is removed, and the dentist evaluates your bite, to check if you are comfortable with the new veneers that have just been fitted. More appointments may be scheduled to check how your gums have responded to the veneers, and again check if the placement of the veneers have been correctly done.

How do you take care of your veneers and how long to they last?

Just like your natural teeth, you need to take care of your teeth veneers too, by brushing and flossing your teeth regularly. Be careful that you do not bite hard objects or for that matter even finger nails. There is a fear of your veneers being chipped off. If you notice a cavity under your veneer, then the veneer must be redone by your dentist.

Veneers are not natural teeth nor or perfect replacements for your teeth. So maintaining good oral hygiene is a must. Avoid chocolates, colas, candies and soda, as they may stain your veneers. If veneers are made of durable material, then they may last anywhere between 12 to 15 years. Sometimes, they may even last for up to twenty years. If the veneer has a small chipping here and here, then they might be repaired, but if there is a major damage, or a cavity in the tooth that they are fitted on, then the dentist will suggest that they be redone again. The life of a veneer usually depends on the person's general health, his oral health and his eating habits. Not using tobacco products, and maintaining proper oral hygiene can promise longer life for your teeth veneers.
