What is synthetic teak?

Synthetic teak is a man-made material that looks like real wood teak and is also designed to have a similar feel.  Synthetic teak is a non-porous composite material that has many benefits over real wood.  One of the biggest reasons to try the alternate material is how much better it is for the environment.  Real teak comes from real forests that are getting dangerously depleted.  With the forests dwindling and all the negative impact harvesting, the trees have it is very harsh on the environment.  The lack of supply has also forced the price of real teak to skyrocket.  Not only is synthetic teak much more affordable but it doesn't have some of the issues real wood does.  For example, real wood doesn't keep it's original appearance very long.  The sun and other elements cause it to look old and worn very quickly.  As a result, there is a lot of upkeep with real wood that the composite material doesn't have.

Why is synthetic teak better than real teak on a boat or yacht?

The weathering real teak displays are even more prevalent on a boat or yacht than in other places.  Constantly sitting out in the sun with lots of moisture in the air just causes the worn look to happen quicker.  Synthetic teak boat decking will keep its new appearance drastically longer.  Appearance isn't the only way synthetic teak has an advantage in harsh weather.  The composite material won't heat up like real wood does.  Any regular boater has felt the burn on their feet when they hit certain surfaces after they have been sitting in the sun for a while.  The heat isn't the only thing that synthetic teak is more resistant to than real wood.  It's also stain resistant to almost everything.  On a boat or yacht, this can be a huge benefit.  Food, drinks, and dirt are all easily cleaned up without leaving a mark.  Perhaps the biggest benefit for boat owners to use synthetic teak is that it doesn't need to be regularly stained like the real wood counterpart.  Not needing to be stained as often means a boat and yacht owner can spend less time working and more time enjoying their boat.

How can boat owners install synthetic teak on their boat or yacht?

Another reason boat owners love synthetic teak is how much easier it is to install.  It's easier to cut and simply needs an adhesive applied and it's ready to go.  Some companies, such as Ameriteak Marine, can pre-cut each piece making the installation even quicker.  All that has to be done is apply the adhesive and put each piece down.
