When you mention self defense training, most people will think of a martial art such as Karate, Tae Kwon Do or BJJ. And although Krav Maga has been around for decades now, there are still a large majority of people who have never heard of it. Nonetheless, Krav Maga has quickly risen through the ranks of the self defense world and has been described as "that brutal stuff" by other martial arts systems. But is Krav Maga enough? Well it depends on the situation because Krav Maga is a self defense system that doesn't involve offensive weapons training. Krav Maga is used to defend not to attack (by attack I mean it isn't used to prey on innocent people the way criminals do). Don't get me wrong, learning how and where to strike is vital when under attack, but having training in multiple areas of self defense will create a well diversified self defense student capable of handling multiple situations.

We believe your personal defense training should encompass much more than Krav Maga and prepare you for what happens before, during and after an attack. Now that doesn't mean we have changed the Krav Maga curriculum and no, we haven't "made the system better." We have combined other forms of self defense training and education to make sure you are learning much more than just hitting pads and kicking shields. Handgun training for example, can backfire if you aren't familiar with your State laws concerning the justification of using deadly force. And pepper spray works great, until it doesn't. Do you know how to position yourself and what you should be looking for when someone ask, "Hey, do you have any change"? If you aren't learning these things in your self defense class then you aren't learning self defense.
There's no doubt that Krav will get you in great mental and physical condition, but is Krav Maga enough? If there were no legal repercussions for stomping someone into the ground and teaching them a lesson after they have just tried to take your life then yes, Krav Maga would be enough. But the sad truth to this is you can be charged if you "over do it" while defending yourself against an attacker. In law enforcement they call it "using excessive force", and cops have gone to jail for it. This also applies to civilians. That's why it is important to know what you can and cannot legally do in regards to self defense. Can I use physical force against a verbal threat? In which situations am I allowed to use pepper spray or a baton? Can I use a handgun against an unarmed man who is threatening me with bodily injury?
If you are in a self defense school or gym and don't know the answer to these questions, then ask yourself if you should. Now I'm not saying your gym or school isn't worth going to, I'm just saying there is so much more to self defense that most people haven't even thought about. After all, staying safe and going home in one piece without any serious injuries is what it's all about in the long run, isn't it? We hope so or otherwise why on earth are you taking self defense lessons? And as far as whether or not Krav Maga is enough, well only you can decide that one. Just be sure your decision is an informed and unbiased one because your life may depend on it one day. Train hard and stay safe everyone.
