Some women consider that their breast is too small or underdeveloped; or if they want to change the shape of their breast; or if they have lost one or both of their breast due to mastectomy.  Sometimes they also want to have a fuller breast, and then they also go for breast reconstructive surgery.

What is a Breast Reconstruction all about?  Breast Reconstruction is a type of cosmetic surgery; which helps to restore one's breasts to their normal shape, size, and proportion after a mastectomy, external or internal injury, or other circumstance that has altered the breast's appearance. The areola or the dark area around the nipple can also be reconstructed. This surgery can be done by placing artificial implants.

Breast reconstruction surgery is quiet helpful for those who have lost their breast due to cancer. After losing a breast women generally starts to feel less feminine and that is why this procedure can be satisfying and effective.

The most popular method of rebuilding the breast is by using breast implants. It is also performed to correct asymmetrical breasts and reconstruct breast after a mastectomy. One can go for the saline breast implants or silicone breast implants as per their choice. There are two types of FDA-approved implants.

  • Saline implants: These implants comprises of a shell that are filled with sterile saline solution after they are inserted. The amount of saline solution filled would depend on the desired breast size and shape.
  • Silicone-gel implants: This silicone implant comprises of solid pieces made of a soft silicone gel which gives the feel of human fatty tissue. It comes pre-filled and therefore requires a longer incision for insertion compared to saline implants. Silicone implants are widely preferred for their natural look and feel.

Depending on the patient's anatomy the plastic surgeon will choose the incision type for placing the implant. The incisions are made either on the edge of the areola, in the armpit or under the breasts. Breast implants come in a variety of sizes as well as shapes so that it suits different body types.

The DIEP flap reconstruction procedure which is also popular and recommended by doctors for those patients who have lost their breasts to lumpectomy or mastectomy. This can help them to get a natural and softer-looking breast.  It is a type of reconstruction surgery in which the skin and fat connected to the blood vessels which is known as Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforators (DIEP), are removed from the lower abdomen and transferred to the chest. This helps in reconstructing the breast without sacrificing any of the abdominal muscles.

The risks and complications associated with implants are as follows:-

  • The implants might get ruptured.
  • Capsular contracture might happen.
  • Bleeding and Bruises might occur.

Ultrasound MRI scans should be done after three months to access the condition of affected implants.
