The manual transmission was previously the standard style in all vehicles; however, as technology has developed, automatic transmissions have generally replaced the manual kind. Even though the majority of cars in North America are automatics, the manual transmission comes with several benefits.

The first, and often the most common reason people give for selecting manual over automatic is that it gives the driver a feeling of being in control of the vehicle. With an automatic transmission, you always have the torque converter pushing the vehicle forward. Without the torque converter in a manual vehicle, you have an easier time breaking, and it enables you to use the momentum of the engine to slow yourself down.

Cheaper to purchase. Manual transmissions are a lot cheaper than automatics. On average, a manual transmission costs about a thousand dollars less than an automatic of the same model, making the choice of a manual transmission car easier on your budget.

Manual cars also tend to be more fuel efficient, although that may not be a long-term benefit based on the technological updates on the automatic transmissions. Depending on driving style and road conditions, drivers can increase their fuel economy by as much as 15 percent.

Manual transmissions are more reliable than automatics over time. While most automatics never see problems with the electronics or shifting mechanisms, occasionally these problems do occur - and when they do most drivers wish they'd opted for the "dumb" manual instead.

Lower maintenance and repair expenses. Automatic transmissions need frequent fluid changes and are vulnerable to fluid leaks which can be very destructive. Many manual transmissions do not require any regular maintenance whatsoever. Repairs are usually more costly on automatics.

Manuals do offer a distinct advantage over automatics when driving in snow and ice. Engine brake is an important factor when driving on a slippery surface such as snow and ice. Using the foot brake as little as possible is essential in reducing the risk of a skid when slowing down or stopping. As manual transmission vehicles allow you full control over gears and speed by using clutch control, engine braking can be mastered, giving you maximum control in such dangerous conditions.

Fun to drive. While spending less, cutting down fuel use, and promoting undistracted driving are all stellar benefits, the primary reason some people prefer manuals is, well, they're just a blast to drive! Automatics are boring as hell to drive.
