Cantina San Marzano are a cooperative of over 1000 small family holdings in the puglia region of Italy. Each of these small families come together every year to produce the finest grapes possible from indigenous varietals from that region. San Marzano has enjoyed huge success in recent times as the Primitivo grape becomes more widely known and Puglia strives to create it's own mark on the Italian wine circuit around the world.

The 62 Anniversario Primitivo di Manduria from San Marzano is regarded as one of the finest from this region. This incredible red wine is made with Primitivo grapes, which are also known as Zinfandel grapes in the California wine-growing region.

The Primitivo grapes are appropriately named because the grapes ripen earlier than other types of grapes that are used to make different varieties of wine. This is a dark-skinned grape that is known for making wines that are inky in appearance and intensely bold and robust in terms of flavour.

The grapes often have a slightly bitter taste, and occasionally are mixed with sweeter fruits, such as cherries or plums, to round out the flavour and to create a balanced and approachable wine. The 62 Annivarsario Primitivo di Manduria is not bitter in any way and this is due in part to the fact that this vintage is dried on the vine in areas that are selected based on their unique climate.

The alcohol content is always high in Primitivo wines and the 62 Anniversario Primitivo is no different. Typically this wine achieves alcohol levels of 14.5% - 15.5% yet it manages to remain beautifully balance between the alcohol and fruit. This is one of the biggest problems for winemakers as if there is too much alcohol and not enough fruit the wine gives a burning sensation in the mouth as it is consumed.

As a bold red wine, it is ideally paired with a number of savoury menu options, and this includes red meat or game for entrees as well as more intensely flavored appetisers. Because the flavour stands well on its own, you can also enjoy drinking this wine without a pairing in the company of good friends and family. It is best enjoyed when served at room temperature or chilled slightly.

Sam Marzano also make a beautiful selection of other wines from the grapes that grow so well in Puglia and these wines are avaiulable in the UK at www.wineman.co.uk where you can choose from over 800 carefully selected wines which are normally reserved for the restaurant trade only.

Some of their other superb wines include the Il Pumo range and the Talo wines. These use grapes like Negroamaro, Primitivo, Malvasia Nera and Vedeca. The range starts with the Il Pumo Primitivo selection and moves onto the Talo mixture and the grand finale is the 62 Anniversario Primitivo, The Collezzione 50 Cinquantra and the muscular Vendoro Negroamaro.

No matter which wine you choose from San Marzano wines you can be assured of the highest quality and the love of over 1000 small families whose livelyhood depends on their quality of fruit.
