While a majority of implants are made with titanium the material used in the surface of the dental implants tend to vary. The material in use plays a very important role as it determines the strength and stability of the dental implants treatment in the long run. For example more that the smoother titanium surface, a surface that is porous is able to have more contact with the bone. There are also many other surfaces used in dental implants like the roughened surface, grit blasted surface, acid etched surface, microgroove titanium surface, plasma sprayed surface and plasma sprayed hydroxyapatite coating. Talk to your dentist and understand what is the surface in the dental implants used in his clinic and its advantages.

Dental implants are also differentiated based on the type of connector used.  This is based on the shape and type of the dental implant head. There are basically three types of connectors with which the dental restorations are fixed to the implant by attaching or screwing.

One type of connector is known as the internal hex. They are made in a hexagonal shape with an opening in the head of the dental implant in which the dentist is able to screw in the restoration or abutment.

The second type of connector is known as the external hex. Here it is the same hexagonal shape as the internal hex, but in these implants it is located at the top of the head of the dental implant.

The third type of connector is known as the internal octagon. Here the opening in the implant is in a octagonal shape in which the dentist fixes the restoration or abutment by screwing it in.

Another major difference in the implants is the sizes they are made available in. Based on the different sizes of the implants it can be figured out where in the mouth they can be placed. But ofcourse, depending on the individual patient the size can differ as it depends on the bone and the spacing in the jaw of the individual dental patient.

The implants standard platform is within the range of 3.5 mm - 4.2 mm diameter. These are usually classified to be fixed in the front of the mouth.

The implants wide platform comes in the range of 4.5 mm - 6 mm diameter and are commonly used to replace the molars at the back of the mouth.

The other type of implant is the narrow or mini implants which only have a diameter of 2mm - 3.5 mm. This is specifically used if the dental patient doesn't have sufficient space in the jaw bone to place a standard size implant.
