While attending an affiliate instructor training weekend in Florida, I met a fellow Krav Maga instructor who was the very definition of the word survival. She grew up outside of the U.S. which I attributed as to why she was so aggressive. My first impression of her was, "this girl DOES NOT mess around". Her mentality was unmatched even among all the other instructors who attended. This was a person who commanded (not demanded) respect, or she would basically kill you. Well not in the real sense of the word, but I'm sure she would not hesitate if it came down to it.

During one of our close quarter training scenarios, we (the instructor's) were all put on a bus. We sat two by two and the person closest to the window would be attacked. First scenario, the attacker had a knife and attacked at will after they sat down next to the person by the window. Point of the scenario, how effective is the Krav Maga techniques we've learned against someone with a knife while we are seated and the threat comes from the side? Front kicks don't work because of the limited space, running isn't an option because of our confinement, and our KM knife defenses went to crap simply because they don't work while seated.

We quickly found out how BJJ training wasn't feasible, against someone "shanking" us with a knife like a needle on a sewing machine in a confined space where going to the ground was impossible. We discovered after all the years of training how one change in position could render us vulnerable to a deadly attack. So what was the solution? When technique fails (and it will fail) go forward, go hard, and destroy your attacker like an unstoppable force of nature! Just fyi, this same scenario was a little easier to defend when a gun was used in lieu of a knife.

Now what grabbed everybody's attention was what the "girl from Jordan" did during her knife defense while on the bus. I don't know if it was on purpose or if she just happen to be lucky but she was strategically positioned towards the back of the bus. After she successfully disarmed the knife wielding attacker she methodically began slitting the necks of everyone seated on the bus as she pushed forward towards the exit. I remember seeing her with this rubber training knife coming up from behind everyone drawing the knife across everyone's neck saying, "I kill you … I kill you".

We all got a good laugh but it was still an eye opener to everyone on board. We tend to focus on just one attacker during our scenario and defense training. We played by the rules like the good guys we are and not one person thought to stop the 2nd attacker simply because it wasn't in the "script". She created her own script, went outside the box and "killed everyone on the bus" because she wasn't going to take any chances with her life. This was truly a survivor's mindset. Some called her crazy but we are surrounded by crazy people every day. Being on the lookout for an additional threat NEEDS to become 2nd nature to us all especially with the fact that terrorist are coordinating their attacks against people just like us. Train hard and stay safe everyone!
