Power outages have always been an inconvenience but can also be a big problem when you need to get through a garage door that relies on an electric opener. Homeowners accustomed to automatically opening the garage door would not find it easy doing so manually. Now that you've come to think of it, how do you open a garage door manually during power outage? The garage door system has a mechanism that disengages the door from the opener, allowing you to manually open the garage door. The garage door uses an arm that attaches to a trolley. To detach the door from the opener, you simply have to disconnect the trolley from the carriage. When performing this task, you would only need one tool – a Phillips-head screwdriver. So where do you start?

Locate the Trigger CordMost garage door openers have a bypass solution for situations when the garage door fails to open automatically. Locate the emergency release cord that normally hangs from the garage door opener rail. This is simply a rope, usually red in color. If you experience a problem finding it, look close to the door arm connecting the door to the opener. Pulling the rope will put the door in manual mode. This manual release detaches the trolley from its point of attachment to the rail. For safety, ensure the garage door is initially closed as it normally comes smashing down upon activation of the manual release.

Keeping it ManualThe release cord controls attachment of the springs to the trolley. In case the power will be gone for long, you may opt to keep the door in manual mode. When constantly opening the door manually, it is important to ensure the rope does not get caught on the tracks. So pull the cord down towards the garage door opener motor head. If your garage door opener lacks an emergency release cord, find the pivot close to the top of the door arm. Using the screwdriver, penetrate a hole on the end of the pivot while pulling down towards you. This will release the door from the opener.

Reattaching the Garage DoorWhen the power is back, you probably still prefer the convenience of an automatic door. To reengage the garage door trolley attachment, pull the cord downwards towards the door opening. Pulling the cord in this direction helps ensure the lever does not engage. Pull up the garage door until it clangs back in place, and just like that, it's now in automatic mode. Alternatively, press the remote opener button and the track will drive the spring attachment to its place.

Checking for Safety and FunctionalityAfter getting the door back to automatic mode, it might appear unevenly placed. Either the springs may be broken or the track needs replacement. This requires the garage door services of an experienced technician. Fixing of tension springs without the required expertise is dangerous and may cause irrevocable damage to a garage door system. In manual mode, if there are some corrupted components in the door or track, the automatic system still maintains its functionality. Remember that the manual release is accessible from only inside the garage. If your garage door can be manually engaged from outside, you are compromising on your home security. If you experience difficulty in engaging the garage door's manual mode or realize some abnormalities after manually opening the door, it's advisable for you to hire certified garage door services.
