Often I would find myself daydreaming about this topic as I rode in a taxi along the many roads of Uzbekistan. I've done a little research and for the purposes of this blog I'd like to convey a few generalities about these caravans.

First of all, the work was hard but proportioned between different caravanserais throughout the trip. Gold, wool, horses, jade, and silk were fairly common goods that would be shipped from city to city. It was next to impossible to find one guide who could navigate a caravan from China to the Mediterranean or India, so each leg of the trip would change hands depending on the road. For example, one person could negotiate to carry a shipment through the Pamir Mountains, while another would be a specialist to carry the load across the desert.

Loading the goods was perhaps the most important part of the trip. For the most part, Bactrian camels were utilized to carry the loads due to their strength and durability. They were ornery animals because of their disposition and were certain to let everyone know if the load was insecure or unbalanced.

The main objective of a caravan was to keep moving. The camels were reliable and could travel for about nine hours per day. At that pace it would take about eight weeks to travel 1,000 miles. Usually the day's work would conclude at 11:00 pm and begin again in the early morning. If one was fortunate to reach a caravanserai, comfortable accommodations could be found there (relatively speaking). If the caravan was unable to find one at the end of the day, they would have to find a comfortable sport to rest in the area. The camels were unloaded, and dinner usually consisted grains or pastas that were made into stews or soups. A good night's rest would be had on a mat near a small fire. During the day there was no stopping, so drivers would munch on dates to keep sated. What do you think of your Uzbekistan Tours so far?
