Facts about the Declined Supply of Regulated Nurses in Canada

It's been 20 years in a row that Canada has not experienced any decline in the number of nurses who can practice in Canada. However, for the very first time, according to a report disclosed by the Canadian Institute of Health Information, there is a notable decline in the number of regulated nurses this year.

While we look back at certain statistical values

 

In the year 2014, according to the Canadian Nurses Association, there were 406,817 regulated nurses eligible to practice in Canada. Out of them 293,205 were RNs (including 3,966 NPs), 107,923 LPNs and 5,689 RPNs. For a fact, the total number of regulated nurses was down by 0.3% from 2013. The supply of RNs/NPs shrank by 1.0%. However, the number of LPNs and RPNs grew by 1.4 and 1.3% respectively. Adding, in the time between 2005 and 2015, the supply of nurses grew at an average annual rate of 1.8%. This means that the growth of regulated nurses in Canada has rested stable for a while.

Is the nursing supply stable all over Canada?

We cannot help it, but agree with the fact that the number of regulated RNs has increased, though slightly. However, there are a few exceptions too. The places like Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Northwest Territories/Nunavut have experienced decline in the supply of regulated nurses.

Not only had the rate of the growth in the number of graduates from Canadian regulated nursing programs slowed, comparatively few nurses applied for registration. A good number of them just decided not to renew their registration. They were either willing to leave the profession, or Canada or they just retired.

You will be surprised to know that more than 80% of nurses chose to stay at the same workplace for as long as between 2005 and 2014. The number of RNs in hospitals might have stayed stable, but the number of nurses in nursing homes and long term care facilities let down by 4,400 fewer than in 2005.

While the retention won't affect us much, what really affects is the fact that there is a bright and successful career in Canada as a nurse. A very few number of nurses registered in the last year. More are the potential job opportunities.
