The professional first division football league in Italy, also known as Serie A, has been operating for over eighty years. Depicted as one of the most tactical league in world football, Serie A had begun its journey in the 1929-30 season. UEFA's league coefficient ranks Serie A as the fourth best league in the world behind Laliga, Bundesliga and English Premier League.

Clubs Hosted

Serie A hosts few famous clubs in the world football. This includes Juventus, Inter Milan, AC Milan and Internazionale. Through the years in the past, many great players had represented these teams and helped the teams to win several honours and accolades. This league had begun in the thirties with eighteen teams only. But since the year 2004, Serie A has been hosting twenty clubs. Therefore, the competition of the league has increased handsomely. The Italian outfits had reached the final of the European competition twenty times (a record in the continent).

Seven Sisters

The famous seven sisters of Italian football includes Juventus, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Roma, Lazio, Napoli and Florentina. Juventus can be considered to be the most successful club in Serie A. Nicknamed the Old Lady, Juventus had won every continental competition in Europe, including the Champions League. Juventus also has the most number of supporters in Serie A (over twelve million- which represents 29% of total football fans in Italy).

With eighteen UEFA  and FIFA titles, AC Milan is the second most successful club in the Italian league. It had won the Champions League seven times. With the exception of the Europa League, AC Milan has won every other major competition in European football.

The only club which had been in the top tier of the Italian football league continuously, since its debut in 1909, is Inter Milan. The club had won the Serie A eighteen times, the CoppaItaliana seven times and the SupercoppaItaliana five times. Inter has its biggest rival in AC Milan ( with whom they share the San Siro stadium). Inter is also the only club to win the first treble in the footballing history of Italy, under the coaching of Mourinho in the 2009-2010 season.

Roma has won the Serie A three times (first of which they won in 1941-42 season). Their home games are played in StadioOlimpico (a stadium they share with Lazio). Roma is the fifth most supported club in Italy (with over 7% of football supporters in Italy).

Famous footballers

The Italian football league in the past had presented the world with many bright stars of this game. It includes the prince of football, Maradona (who had played for Napoli), Platini and Maldini. These are the stalwarts who had shined brightly while playing at Serie A.

Present Scenario

With the years, several teams are trying their best to increase the capacity in their stadium to increase the intake of supporters. Roma had already revealed that they would be leaving their present ground to a new stadium which has been shaped in the form of Colosseum (by the year 2019). With more supporters, the clubs could increase their fluency of football and provide exciting matches for them to enjoy.
