Vincent Van Gogh wrote "A feeling for things in themselves is much more important than a sense of the pictorial".  You sense it in the imagery of landscape photographers like Sudhir Ramchandran.

A great landscape photograph is the one that has a soul and not just capture the elements in the camera view. One needs to fall in love with a landscape and keep visiting it to know when is it at its best – like painters did. It needs patience and art to bring to life a view that can transcend the viewer.

Sudhir Ramchandran does not believe in creating images that are postcard perfect but pictures that tell a story, have a mood and are more of a painting. They relevantly allude to the history of a ruin, the wilderness of a forest or the timelessness of a view from a mountain top.

Below are some of breathtaking landscape photographs with descriptions by the photographer Sudhir Ramchandran himself.

A SPLENDOUR IN RUINS: VIEW FROM MATANGA HILL AT HAMPI, KARNATAKA, INDIA.

How does one display the grandiose of the Vijayanagara Kingdom without showing a glimpse of the grand vistas of the Empire? I have attempted to do this through my photographs to express the state of continuous elation I felt whenever I visited this spectacular part of our history.

My team and I scaled this hill for days at different times to understand the light. When we realized that the best light would be at dawn, we went up for another week, this time with large format cameras that included the 10x8 and the 5x4 cameras, the Hassleblads and the Nikons. This time we were looking for a time when the fog shielded the sun just enough to dilute its intensity and allowed it to sharply angle at the bottom to accentuate the greens and rocks and yet cast an almost shadowless softness on the temple below. THE SUN PAINTS A LANDSCAPE : NILGIRI MOUNTAINS, TAMIL NADU, INDIA.

"Dawn in the Nilgiris allows you to watch the sun painting the landscapes. Here it got behind this bush and made it transparent, it scraped across the parallel peaks beyond and created depth, it percolated through the misty drops to render the soft mystique around the jagged peaks, it reflected off the sky and softly lit the silvery grey lichen on the rocks in front and the greens beyond. And all I did was just shoot the sun's strokes as it created this amazing canvas. " – Sudhir Ramchandran

WHEN A PICTURE FORMS: NILGIRI MOUNTAINS, TAMIL NADU, INDIA.

"The early morning of the Nilgiri mountains - I locked myself in this place for days as I knew the spot I wanted was between the 2 street lamps - As I waited, the picture began to form...and at one point of time, the stillness of the dog and the horses beyond created a tension with the red transparent saree and the soft motion of the bird above.

The play of light and shade in this panoramic lazy scene, with the sun rising in this misty grey morning completed this picture - and I wrapped the shoot with satisfaction." – Sudhir Ramchandran

Based in Bangalore, Sudhir is known as one of the best photographers in India for his indepth knowledge of the art and science of photography in fashion photography, advertising photography, lifestyle photography and editorial photography.
