In his book "No Excuses! The Power of Self-Discipline "Brian Tracy talks about what separates great people from the mass. In each area of our lives, what most people lack is self-discipline.

We talk about how to achieve greatness, how to succeed in life and the main component is a commitment. I think people know deep down what they have to do in order to accomplish their goals, live their dreams. If we had a gun to our head and a guy said "Do the right thing", we wouldn't ask ourselves so many questions. Especially, we would not make so many excuses. Excuses are only that, excuses. Being our circumstances, age, gender, ethnicity, background, human beings have a natural tendency to attribute where they're at in their life to these characteristics.

But by making excuses, all you're really doing is showing the world your insecurities. And if we want to accomplish great things in life, we need to get rid of those excuses, just let them go. Self-discipline is the key to success, doing something even if you don't feel like it. And this is huge, we are too tired to go to the gym, not motivated to work, had a harsh day at work so it's ok to have this candy bar. But let me say this: motivation is overrated. As Tracy says, if you're waiting to be motivated to do something then you rely on your environment, to some extent. You are waiting for things to happen to you, whereas the successful spirit is the opposite.

Self-discipline comes from within, motivation from external factors. This is something that you build and it takes time. I'm not going to sit there and tell you it's as easy as a decision to get yourself to do things. But when what you do is align with your purpose in life, you will find the will to discipline yourself to execute, regardless of your excuses. You'll get up and do the things that get you ahead with your dreams. Ask yourself what you do, or rather what you don't do, will affect you a week from now, a month, a year later. And you will learn how to gain from delayed gratification for long term success.

Learn self-discipline and stop making excuses. Because on this planet there is hundred excuses maker for one guy who takes action. You have a choice.
