June 2016 Democratic Party primaries in New York State mark the end of an era. It could very well be the turning point in history for the city and the state. This is because since the 1970s the congressional district had become synonymous with one name; Charles Bernard Rangel or Congressman Charlie Rangel as the statesman is popularly known. Today he is 85 and finally has announced that he is not going to participate in the primaries to be held in June 2016.
Remarkable Career
That he will be no more be seen at the helm of the affairs does not take away the credit Congressman Charles Rangel has earned over the years with several innovative and reformative moves. Challenges have come his way from time to time in form of other eminent personalities vying for the place of the congressman in the 13th district of NY but they have all been brushed away easily by the charismatic figure in the past; at least till 2012 elections. Even today when the next elections are hardly six months away, he is still the representative of the 13th Congressional District of the State of New York. In terms of length alone the long illustrious representation of the man is second only in the history of the House of Representatives in United States. In fact; he is there since 1971 and for 44 years now. He is also the Dean of the congressional delegation of New York.

In his illustrious career Congressman Charles Rangel has achieved some remarkable feats. He is the first member of the Democratic Party who as an African-American chaired the House Ways and Means Committee. In addition; he is the founding member in respect of the Congressional Black Caucus. Currently he is also the second longest serving member of the House of Representatives. Even the earlier career of congressman Charlie Rangel in the United States Defense services was illustrious where he earned a bronze star as well as purple heart for his exceptional services.
