How to Train Your Cat and Become Friends with Him

            Some cat owners feel frustrated by their pets' behavior. In fact, sometimes they are even more frustrated by us. For instance, here is the common situation: you hear the sound of the claws on a couch. You start to shout, throw a pillow, or even squirt water. It's all in vain, because he will do it again. He is not ignoring you, but he has no idea how to connect your negative actions with his own behavior. Naturally, cats are solitary hunters, and they don't really get any social signs, especially those that aim to modify their behavior.

                How is your kitty supposed to understand that you are yelling because you want him to stop spoiling the couch? They have no cognitive ability to connect their scratching to your anger, so all that he sees is chaotic aggression towards him. So you are perceived as a crazy giant attacking him for no reason.

            Instead of training him, you just become an object of fear. Your cat feels stressed and frustrated because you interrupt his natural needs like raking claws and jumping on something high. They want to express their natural behavior, but they are not allowed to. So they continue to do that when you are not around. 

The way to train you cat

            The best way you can train your feline friend is through the environment. For instance, you can put the double-sided tape on your coach, or foil on the countertop. Then, show him a better alternative and put an attractive scratching post nearby or an awesome cat-house you bought him. After your cat does something you want him to do, reward him with a treat. This strategy works with them because it proves that there are activities that cause negative reinforcement and those that provide pleasure.  

            In those hours of the day when your kitty is not sleeping, he wants to get active and move through the house as harmoniously as possible. But there are some things that make him uncomfortable, like a food dish placed near the refrigerator or his favorite box next to the sliding glass door.

            You might be deaf to the sound of coffee-grinder or refrigerator fan, but these things sound like growling monsters to your pet. Try to place his dishes in a calm place where he will have an opportunity to eat in a peaceful place and escape the rout (not in the closet!).

            Sights can be stressful, too.
