A question that haunts every individual who is well versed about the ERP market is how do you survive and more importantly grow in this highly competitive arena between global heavyweights including SAP and Oracle? This question is directed specifically to Tally, one of India's few original software developers. It's been more than 6 years since Tally launched its Tally ERP 9 'A' series and at that specific time the presentations made by the company officials on the product only dealt with financial data. At that point of time, it portrayed as if Tally couldn't think beyond accounting or its solution, even though it was labelled as an ERP. Many believed that it was just a repackaged accounting solution housing some new features. Even the President of Tally Solutions acknowledged that it's traditionally an accounting software and this mind-set needed a drastic change.
There are several small and big players in India's ERP market. In one place where there are giants like SAP, Oracle, Microsoft, etc. in other there are vendors such as Infor, Sage, QAD, Ramco, etc. Out of these Oracle and SAP are undoubtedly the market leaders, so the main question here is how Tally intends to compete in this space. Till date Tally's focus has been on the small office and home office segment (SOHO). Therefore, it's not surprising that of the 260,000 businesses using Tally ERP, majority of them come in the SOHO category, while the rest are large enterprises. Explaining this, the president of Tally Solutions is of the view that it's the small businesses who are their typical clients and they do not require extravagant features in their ERP. The clients mainly require automate financial data and this is what Tally provides them.
Though Tally has been quite successful in penetrating the SOHO space, it requires changing its strategy when it plans to tap the large enterprises. Explaining the change in strategy, the president of Tally Solutions said that their approach towards ERP is to identify the key pain areas for each category of clients (small, medium and large) and create solutions that emphasize on that specific issue. He further added that the company has discussed SaaS internally, but at the end of the day they need to see whether through SaaS they are solving the client's requirement or their own delivery problem. He further elaborated that they already solved the client's problem long time ago by making Tally a light product and easy to install. Since its inception, Tally has taken a giant leap by entering the ERP space, and has succeeded commendably. Its latest offering, Tally ERP 9 has created wonders for businesses globally by offering them the real value for their money with value additions, various modules, excellent post sales service, etc. The company presently has third party partners who develop applications for business intelligence, analysis, etc. for its ERP solution. Thus, the ecosystem needs to be nurtured more so that Tally customers can get full Tally support and access to more useful applications.
