When you are photographing small to medium products it's generally a good idea to use a product photography box. It allows you to have a complete control over the objects lighting and background. A soft background and diffused lighting highlights the product in a beautiful manner and it is a proved fact which gives more sales and higher perceived value. The common light sources have lots of flaws for this type of photography since they produce uneven lighting and also produce incorrect white balance and unwanted shadows. The camera's flash often overexposes the very front of the subject and underexposes the rest of the part but that is not the case with product photography box.

There is usually small and very bright reflections if the product is shiny for e.g. a piece of glass. Also very dark shadows are often created due to very harsh and direct nature of the light that does not happen in a product photography box. But if you talk about the best source of light for product photography it is direct sunlight since the white colour is more natural. However if we talk about the white camera flash there will be more of harsh shadows and less of bright reflections which does not happen with a product photography box.

But sunlight is not always available especially on a cloudy day. Also the sunlight is not predictable and it changes from weather to weather and it gives you less opportunity for taking photos. The standard set-up for product photography box is to place it on table with the light sources such as a table lamp directly opposite to each other on each side and the tripod centre in the front. If you place the product photography box on the table it makes it easier to see and adjust and also makes it easy for the shooting by using tripod. The backdrop is attached at the top inside the product photography box and it should fall freely down into a gentle curve at the back and then across the bottom of the box. You should make sure that product photography box is clean and free of debris and wrinkles and if you are using a fabric backdrop you should make sure that it is ironed and has a complete smooth look. Now you are all set to start photographing. You should place your subject carefully inside the product photography box and you should start with it in the exact centre.

You should move your subject forward or backward relative to the light so that it can change the shadows and light. You have to experiment with the object and the light to get the desired result. You can also point out the lights slightly at an angle rather than straight on the tent. You should make sure that there should be space between your subjects and walls so that you can zoom in or position your camera to see only the backdrop and not edges. You should consider the ambient lighting and adjust it according to the needs. So in this way you can do great product photography.
