The Thing that is Different about One Direction

It can be seen that boy bands of the present day have finally quit playing games with the heart of the young girls, ready to exhaust their vocal chords at the name of the bands. Or have they really? In the present times, it seems that bands are evolving their moves and music to entice the audience in the new age group.

Well, for one the boy band industry has been successful in making one notable improvement. They have dropped the constipated expression look. Earlier, the bands mostly targeted the young women with their choreographed, pelvic dance moves, lubricated abdominal thrusts and the classic pained look that appeared to originate in the lower intestine. That was basically a way of saying that the love that they had for the girl was hurting them so much that it was giving them a constipated and pained expression originating from deep within their intestines. The curled upper lip, the flared up nostrils and the furrowed brow, all signaling to one thing; the hurt that the girl's love has brought upon them. Every band then seemed to be in on this move.

Compared to those idiosyncratic expressions, the ones that dominate the One Direction, videos are quite different. The boys are happy and relaxed here. These boys smile and they joke around. For the most part they appear to be having a good time, goofing around in their videos.

The boys even seem to be joking around with the moves of the past. By attempting a pastiche. In "one Thing" Harry frames his chin with his thumb and pointer finger, a callback although sarcastic to the typical boy band move.

Fifteen years back from now, appealing to young women was a serious business. The boy bands had to work very hard with their unique theatrical moves. Watching the old videos now is pretty unsettling from the modern day perspective. To see five grown men lounging at an abandoned playground, unbuttoning their shirts, but not removing them, writhing independently in the rain, is quite a sight for the present day audience. The things that would definitely look absurd now, were the obvious moves to attempt.

The boys in One Direction are still impossibly good looking. But, thankfully they do not need to emote those moves to get the mass of girls enticed to their videos. This goes to show that the band is inherently closer to its audience than the other earlier bands were.
