There are many ways to remind our soldiers overseas that they are appreciated, respected and missed.  Of course it starts at home and if you know someone in the military make every effort to stay in touch when possible and send goods from home that they may not be able to attain in a foreign land.  Even the simplest things are prohibited or just plain unavailable. Items such as baked goods, DVDs, magazines, and sweets are truly appreciated.

By shipping goods overseas to soldiers and all service members of the Armed Forces you will find it surprising that the most practical items can make all the difference.  Even though the environment can be quite stressful there is a lot of downtime and a need for personal items. Of course soldiers in the military can be competitive and sportsman.

If you have easy to store board games, Cards and other novelty items they can be quite useful during downtime. Personal items like body wash, lip balm, pain relievers and topical creams can also be extremely helpful for specific weather climates. Of course sentimental items are great so make as many videos, hand written letters and photos from home life as possible.

What may surprise you is that the amenities that we take for granted at home can provide a special moment of relief overseas. Even the smallest things such as hot sauce, flavoring packets for beverages, sunflower seeds and barbecue sauce can help alter the mood of a soldier in battle.

You can directly send packages on your own but it is highly recommended that you work with the USO and Operation Gratitude organizations. If you plan to assemble and ship care packages to love ones overseas there are a few things you should consider. Check with the organizations mentioned to see what items are prohibited.

You should send plenty of novelty, toiletries, and sports gear. Even the simple essentials such as stationery, board games, shampoo, footballs, frisbees, batteries and magazines are great for care packages. I highly recommend sending photos, video and postcards of local attractions, landmarks or anything that may remind them of home life.

Bringing holiday cheer can come in the form of decorations on Christmas, Halloween costumes and even 4th of July decor. All of these items can be a huge morale booster and great for the moments where they can normalize and unwind.

Jesse Losey loves America and served in the Navy from 1995 to 2004. Jesse set up a local donation center in Savannah, Georgia in 2014 and sent 1200lbs of donated goods to local soldiers overseas.
