Lotion is great for the skin, but some lotions we
buy from the store may not be the best options caused by the chemicals and
preservatives in them. By making your own lotion, then ingredients are simple and easy;
shea butter, coconut oil, grapeseed oil and any essential oil of your choosing. There are
many different essential oil combinations out there, whether you are going for fragrance
or other healthy benefits. They are easy to make and fun to do, especially when my
daughter helps me.
Ingredients:
1-3/4 cups shea butter
1/2 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup grapeseed oil
essential oils
Directions:
Measure out shea butter and coconut oil and melt over medium-low heat in a double
broiler, stirring constantly until there are no lumps left. Left cool for about 30 minutes,
then stir in the grapeseed oil and essential oil(s) of your choosing. Cover the oil mixture
and freeze for about 20-30 minutes, or refrigerate for 1-2 hours. You want the mixture to
solidify but not harden. Transfer the mixture into a mixing bowl and whip until it is soft
and fluffy. Then spoon into a clean glass jar. You are then ready to use as needed.
I am just now finishing up the homemade lotion a friend had given me. She used
rosemary as the essential oil and it was amazing. It goes on greasy as first but quickly
soaks in and leaves you with soft, non-greasy skin. This was the recipe she sent me to
use. She also gave me a little book on essential oils called Edens Garden. It explains
what each essential oil has to offer and some recipes to use them in.
The recipe I am going to make is an age defining one. The oils it calls for is a blend of
frankincense, helichrysum, lavender, myrrh, rose and sandalwood. I would also try the
muscle relief recipe. It calls for a blend of clove, helichrysum, peppermint and
wintergreen. Both of these two recipes also could be added directly to a carrier oil like
jojoba oil, but I would make lotions out of them.
Another recipe that I would use is the cleaning blend. This isnĘžt a lotion, but it is great for
cleaning your kitchen and the rest of the house. It calls for a blend of lavender,
lemongrass, rosemary and tea tree. Mix with 1 cup vinegar, 2 cups purified water and
20-30 drops of the oils. This blend had antiviral, antibacterial, anti fungal and antiseptic
qualities.
