It is the start to a new year and that means new resolutions, new experiences and as always a lot of cake! There is nothing as good as enjoying a big slice of cake to make your day. Like the famous saying goes, 'A little cake hurt no one'. So, if you have a party planned around the weekend or want to give someone a really good surprise, we suggest making a delicious cake for them and none of them is better than black forest cake!

Here is what you would need to prepare the cake. You need three sets of ingredients for this – cake, frosting and syrup. The cake ingredients are about 75gms of flour, equal amount (75gm) of cocoa powder, sugar powder about 40gms, a cup of butter (100gms), half a dozen eggs and a spoon of vanilla essence.

The frosting ingredients would be whipping cream (the heavier, the better) – a can or 300ml should do, sugar – a cup, a spoon of vanilla essence, cherries – 12, grated chocolate – 100gms, chocolate powder – 1 packet 50gms).The syrup ingredients would be a cup of water, half a cup of sugar and a spoon of vanilla essence.

Now, to prepare the black forest cake, you need to start with the base of the cake first. So, first, sieve all the flour together with the cocoa powder in a bowl. Once mixed, pour the heated butter into this mixture. Beat the eggs in a separate bowl with a blender until this becomes really creamy and rich. You would know when it is done as you would get a frothy finish to it. Add the beaten eggs into the bowl of flour, cocoa & butter. Keep mixing thoroughly and at the same time add a spoon of vanilla essence. Within a few minutes of mixing, you would get a smooth batter that would form the base of the cake.

Gently apply a layer of butter on the base of the cake pan so as to avoid the base from sticking to the pan. Dust a little flour and cocoa powder too on the pan for the same reason. Pour the cake batter to the pan and bake it for about 45 minutes at 180 centigrade.  You can check if the cake is baked with a simple method, take a tooth pick and slowly insert it in the middle of the cake. The moment the tooth pick comes out clean without mark of the cocoa, your cake is baked. Once baked, remove the cake and allow it to cool.

To create the syrup, add water or sugar syrup into a small pan, add some sugar if you're using plan water and bring it to boil. Add vanilla essence to the syrup and keep it aside to cool down. Similarly, for the frosting, you can beat the cream and add sugar and vanilla essence till you get a nice fluffy frosting done. If you want an easier method, use frozen whipped cream for this.

Once the cake and the syrup is cool, place the cake top up and flatten the top. Apply the frosting evenly across it and cut the cake from the side into three equal circles. This would mean cutting it vertically. With the frosting being absorbed by a single layer of cake, add some syrup on top of the cake too. Use a fork to make holes within the cake so that the syrup and frosting is absorbed well. Place one cut layer over another and add a generous amount of frosting on the top of the cake. The top most layers get all the cherries, so place them appropriately. Use the grated chocolate evenly over the cake and choose designs that you would want on top of the cake. As a final touch, use the powdered chocolate over the cake.

Cool it in the fridge for half an hour or so to get the frosting just perfect. Slice evenly and make someone's day special with a slice of cake! Try out this black forest recipe any day as it only takes a couple of hours to bake and is the perfect dessert after every meal.
