Who needs the freedom of speech more than writers! They write what they think and what they want to express. They speak through their writing and let the world know what they believe people should know and that is why the killing of Kannada writer has created such a fury in writers all around the country. The murder of MM Kalburgi, the writer and the rationalist from Kannada, seems like a serious threat to the freedom of expression. Search for writers retuning Sahitya Akademi awards news on the internet to get more information on this.

Writer's killing ignited the protest

MM Kalburgi, a 76-year-old critic of Hindu idolatry was gunned down at his home this September and since then many Indian novelists and writers have returned the highest literary honour in India awarded by National Academy of Letters (Sahitya Akademi) in protest against the government's silence on violence. Around 30 writers have returned their Akademi awards so far, and some more are likely to follow the trend.  To know more about these writers who have returned the award in protest against the climate of growing intolerance and communalism, read more about Indian political news on the internet.

Earlier instances of award returns

It is not the first time in Indian history when someone has returned the award. In past, Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore had also given up his Knighthood in protest against Jalianwala Bagh massacre. Similarly world renowned novelist Khushwant Singh had returned the Padma Bhushan Award in protest against operation Bluestar. Though, it is for the first time in Indian history that writers of all sorts are returning their awards in such a large number for one single cause. Along with the noted writers from India, many others who have settled abroad and some politicians as well have gotten involved in the controversy.

We also have some writers like Namvar Singh and Gurdial Singh who are not willing to return the award. Though they believe that government is practicing double standards but refused to return the award with a fair point made that the award was given to them by Sahitya Akademi and not by the government they are protesting against.

Protest against protest

Meanwhile, Hindutva group, Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha is performing "Budhi Shudhi Yagya", in attempt to cleanse the minds of these writers who, according to the group, are bringing shame upon the whole nation. The group finds these writers guilty of "Desh Droh", they say they are the traitors. Of course they don't like to debate and they too have to protest against 'the protest' in some way and this is how they do it. They make comments and make news. You can learn more about "Budhi Shudhi Yagya by reading further content on Indian writers returning awards news.

Returning of the award has really got the hype now.  If the act has made any impact on government, it is yet to be seen but all these writers have now surely caught the attention of media. Now who is getting benefit of this drama even if you ask, every one wonders the same. Government is not showing any sign of regret, instead it is stated that these writers are spoiling the country's image.  So if these writers get nothing out of this protest they will surely be enjoying the recognition by media and a noticeable increase in sale of their books.
