One of the most backward district of Rajasthan, Banswara district is formerly a princely state ruled by the Maharavas. It has an area of area of 5037 square kilometer. It is situated in the southern most part of the desert state. There are two concept behind the name of Banswara, one concept is that it is named after a bhil ruler Bansia ruled it. Later on, he was defeated and killed by the first Maharaval of princely state Jagmal Singh. The other concept is Bans Vara means the country of bamboos. The bamboos were found in abundance in the dense forests of this region.
The Quadri triangular shaped district is a home to around 7.6 lakh males and 7.4 lakh females. It is subdivided into three sub divisions which is further divided into five tehsils, eight development blocks namely Ghatol, Sajjangarh, Kushalgarh, Garhi, Peepalkhunt, Talwara, Anandpuri and Bagidora.
The historical Banswara is also known as the City of Hundred Islands as large number of Islands are featured in Mahi Lake. The Mini Jalianwala Bagh massacre took place in November 1913. Number of bhils revolted with a social reformer Govindgiri and Punja and resulting to that Hundreds of Bhils were shot dead at the Mangarh hillock during a peaceful meeting. The event is also known as. The place has become sacred and is better known as the Mangarh Dham.
Currently, Ninama,Shri Manshankar from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is the member of parliament for the Banswara seats which is ST reserved seat. The Banswara district consists eight Vidhan Sabha seats and all are reserved for ST. The setting member of legislative assembly are Sushil Katara from Chorasi, Dhansingh Rawat from Banswara, Bheema Bhai from Kushalgarh, Mahendrajit Singh Malviya from Bagidora, Jeetmal Khant from Garhi and Navneetlal Ninama from Ghatol.
As we all know Rajasthah is one of the best tourist state in Asia. Large number of tourists visit every year. Some of the major tourist destinations in Banswara are Anand Sagar Lake, Kagdi Pick Up Weir, Mahi Dam, Madareshwar, Shri Raj Mandir, Talwara, Diablab Lake, Andeshwar (Jain Temple), Chheench, Shri Sai Baba Mandir, Abdulla Pir, Tripura Sundari, Paraheada, Ram Kund, Arthuna and Bhim Kund.
The nearest railway station is Ratlam Junction at 80 kilometers and airport is Udaipur airport at 160 kilometers from the town of Banswara. As the area is backward, Hindi new papers and online Hindi news is the mostly read in the district. Recently, Banswara news revealed that the Railway ministry may announce in the upcoming budget, the construction of railway track from Ratlam to Banswara for the better connectivity of transportation.
The best season to visit nestled beautiful amongst the Aravallis is the winter season, from August to March as the summers are extremely hot and exhausting. Sporadic rainfalls make the district look very beautiful during this monsson season which starts from July to September.
The Banswara is famous for historical and natural beauty. Hindi, Punjabi, Wagri (blend of Mewari and Guajarati) are the common language of the area. The economic condition of the district is below average and it receives funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF).
