I am so grateful that I have found a welcoming and safe environment to learn Boxing. Initially as a girl I was hesitant about attending classes as I was unsure about the level of contact that would take place at gym, I also thought I might be the only female to turn up to the class. To my surprise the beginner sessions involved no direct contact. This made me feel very safe – especially seeing as I was pairing up with guys much bigger then myself.
Everyone has been so patient and encouraging throughout my time at the Boxing gym, reassuring me that it is normal to find certain things tricky and make mistakes when learning new combinations I had not practiced much before. I am so glad I eventually found the courage to attend my first class on my own. I had spent months asking friends to come in with me for my first class, however very few of my female friends seemed interested. Many of my friends have attended 'Boxercise' type fitness classes at their local gyms, however generally over time they became bored with the repetitive class structure.
I am so glad that I decided to learn Boxing Melbourne in a martial arts gym rather than a local recreation centre. From one class to the next you are learning new things and seeing yourself make progress. The trainers at the gym were quick to point out that the angle I was punching on, and the way I held my fist, would have eventually resulted in me injuring my wrists and knuckles. The coaches are experts of the art and have a great eye for detail to ensure that all members are practising in a manner that will not lead to anyone accidently harming themselves or others.
Another member at the gym was also kind enough to give me a pair hand wraps and teach me how to wrap my wrists for additional support, as they had noticed I had not been bringing my own along to classes. The people at my gym treat one another more like family and I have never found another group of people as kind, gentle, and inspiring as the people I am lucky enough to train with almost every day.
This is why after six months of training I decided to attend my first beginner's friendly sparring day at the gym. This was my first experience of 'contact' in Boxing and I absolutely loved it. These days learning martial arts is my highest priority and I have found a way to organise my other commitments and responsibilities around classes so I am able to attend at least seven sessions each week.
