It's more than a month now that every Footie in India, is glued to the TV set or is out there in the stadium with their ISL jerseys to cheer for their team. Inspired by other popular sporting leagues like the IPL, the Indian Super League brought footballers from abroad and created franchises with domestic football talent and foreign players. The eight franchises, which are battling out hard are Atletico de Kolkata, Chennaiyin FC, Delhi Dynamos FC, FC Goa, FC Pune City, Kerala Blasters FC, Mumbai City FC and NortheastUnited FC. Many of the big industrialist, Bollywood celebs and Sporting legends have associated themselves with the league by buying stakes in the teams. At last, football is hogging the limelight of sports lovers across the country.
The second season of the league which was kick started in the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai this year on 3rd of October has travelled to many cities now! Indian Super League Fixtures are being played in 8 cities. The first match of the league was played between the defending champion, Atletico de Kolkata and the home team Chennaiyin FC. Till now, so many matches have been played and each team is doing its best to climb up the table. As of now, Pune City FC is at the top with 12 points in their kitty. However, there are still too many matches to be played and any team can come up or down at any point of time. Four of the teams will make it to the semi finals and two will compete in the finals on 20th October.
Indian Super League has certainly revolutionized the sport of Football in India. For the first time Football has come in the fore front. It has ushered in a new wave of enthusiasm in India's emergent sporting milieu. Right from the outset, the ISL has been geared towards one overarching objective— to develop football across the country in a systematic and holistic manner. A focused approach towards grass roots development combined with specific measures to engage the nation's football fans are the two cornerstones of the League's existence. The objective of the league is a sustainable long-term development. Indian Super League is a big step in the footballing history of India with a mission to put Indian football on the world map.
