The game has been developed by Trion Worlds and was released in March 2011. The game takes place in the world of fantasy, Telara. The game has fie planes: air, water, fire, earth and death. All these five planes meet on the land of Telara. Each plane is rule by a deity that is a dragon, an elemental force. Some other forceful dragons have formed a union, Blood Storm that play to capture the planes of Telara and make use of the planes for their benefit. History had the inhabitants of Telara overpowering the Blood Storm and save their planes. Now again these enemies are taking birth to gain control on the intersecting planes of Telara. The players take on the avatar of Ascended, who is a superhuman warrior and has been assigned the task to steer clear Telara of the enemy forces.

To combat the main enemy of Telara, Regulos, there are two groups, Guardians and the Defiant. The guardians follow the rule of vigil which is the supreme God of Telara. The group includes the elves, dwarves and the Mathosians. The Vigil has reincarnated the Ascended Guardians after they had suffered death at the hands of the enemies. The Defiant are the one who for their own personal reason do not follow the God of Vigil, the supreme power in Telara. They trust the existence of science and technology and believe in that for their power. They are inclusive or Eth, the Kelari and the Bahmi. The Ascended Defiant were restored to life by technology, a study that was based on the soul structure of the Ascended Guardians. At the start of the game, the group of Defiant is sent back in time to overpower the Regulos and to bring to end the dominance of Vigil in Telara.

The in game currency of the game is the RIFT Platinum. This currency can be used to buy the rarest of the amours and weapons. These make the superhuman capable of overpaying the enemies of Telara. The currency also helps the player to acquire all that they need to ascend safely and securely across Telera. Once the currency is accumulated in the players account they can easily buy high profile weapons and amours to scale up and destroy any one that stands in their way.
