The real name of this great personality is Monhan Das Gandhi, but he is known as Mahatma Gandhi. He was born in 1869 in a city of India known as Porbandar.

School Days

Mohandas belongs to the tradesmen, the social class. As for his parents are concerned, Gandhi's mother didn't know how to read and write, but the common sense as well as the religious devotion of the great lady had a great impact on the character of Gandhi.

Higher Education

As for as his academic career goes, Mohandas proved to be a good student; however, no one saw any sign of leadership in him. He lived in India until the death of his father. After the demise of his father, he left for England and stayed there to study for a degree in Law.

Gandhi and Bhagvad Gita

Before long, he got associated with the Vegetarian society. Once, he was requested to translate one of the top religious scriptures of Hinduism known as Bhagavad Gita. Gita awakened a great sense of pride in Gandhi for the Indian scriptures. He believed that Gita was a great pearl.

Early Life and Career

At the age of thirteen, he got hitched with Kasturba. One of Gandhi's great habits was that he was very truthful. The purpose of his going to England was to become a barrister. However, as a lawyer, he couldn't do very well. In South Africa, Gandhi started a powerful movement against the rulers of Britain. Aside from this, he headed the freedom movement in India as well, which resulted in the independence of India in 1947.

Non-violence

Gandhi Ji didn't believe in violence. Instead, he believed in love and was against all types of injustice in society. Throughout his life, he lived like a saint and suffered a lot for the victory of truth. He had a great sympathy for the poor and believed in the equality of human beings. Freedom Struggle

In 1915, Gandhiji came back to India after living in South Africa for 21 years. While heading the freedom movement in India, he didn't leave his principles of peace, non-violence and truthfulness. In 1942, Gandhiji started the "Quit India Movement" for the purpose of making the British leave the country. He created the popular slogan "do or die" for the people of India. While the movement took a bit of time to succeed, the British had to leave India in 1947. On 15 August 1947, India was a free country.

Death:

Sadly, on an unfortunate day of 30 January 1948, the great leader was shot dead. While he is not among us, he will live in our hearts for good.
