With the summer slowly fading into the background, along comes those cold nights that you cannot keep warm – even if they do come every year. They keep us awake and make us uncomfortable. We spend an extra five minutes in the shower embracing the hot water falling over  our numb and tingling bodies.

Where the cold hits hardest is in the bed. The one place that it shouldn't be allowed to intrude. A whopping 49% of people have trouble sleeping due to cold temperatures. Our duvets seem to be incapable of defensive protection against the might of the winter air. If only there were some helpful hints and tips to evade the onrushing chills.

Night Time Attire

Wear pyjamas or large t shirts to help combat the effects of the cold. If you are still cold, several thinner layers are better than one thick layer as they trap heat. Having several thin layers on also means that you can remove a layer or two if you get too hot. If you heat your body too much then the likelihood is that you will not sleep very well.

Night Time Hygiene

You will probably be having a bath or a shower at some point during your evening. As well as the obvious aim of making sure you are clean, having a warm bath or shower shortly before retiring will relax you and warm up your body for when it's time to sleep.

Night Time Drink

Hot drinks at night are a huge no-go if they contain caffeine. There are benefits to be reaped from caffeine free hot drinks however. Warm, milky drinks will increase body temperature and keep you warm ready for bed time.

Night Time Exercise

Obviously don't start pushing your body to limits but light circulation exercises will keep the body warm.

Night Time Temperatures

Keeping the bedroom at optimal sleeping temperature (around 18˚C) will ensure that it is ready to be slept in from the moment you decide it is time for bed. Constant temperature means that there are no rises or dips in the atmosphere that your body may struggle to adapt to.

Night Time Mattresses and Duvets

Some mattresses, in particular memory foam mattresses, keep heat trapped in and are ideal for cold winter nights. You may wish to change your quilt during the winter to one with a higher tog rating. Many people have different quilts for different times of the year. Again don't forget that many thin layers are better than thick ones. For example, instead of using two duvets if you are excessively cold, trying several thinner layers to keep warm.

Night Time Helpers

There are many items available to help you keep warm at night. Electric blankets are a great way of getting that warmth that you crave into your sleeping area. Make sure you unplug it and that cords are not in dangerous places.

Hot water bottles are as popular as ever due to their simplicity. They are designed to stay warm all night long. Be sure to use a hot water bottle cover to avoid burnt.

Wear some thick, warm slippers around the home before bed. You will be surprised how much of a difference they can make.

Heat is lost by the body via the head and feet. If you are able to sleep with socks then you could wear woollen socks to bed.
