1. Dr. Clifford James, you wrote a book called A First Time Parent's Survival Guide: A How-to Manual for the First Two Years, can you tell me what the book is about? This is a parenting guide written especially for first time parents. The book goes through how to choose a pediatrician, how to feed your baby, what happens while your in the hospital with your baby, leads a parent through each well child check, common illnesses and frequent types of injuries.
2. Why do you feel there was a need to write a book for parents? There are many parenting books that have already been written but I felt most fell into the category of reading like a textbook, written in a way that many parents became concerned that their baby wasn't developing normally, or so sophomoric the knowledge a parent really needed got lost in the humor. I wanted to write a book that was easy to read, had the information that all parents were going to need with enough humor to make it an interesting.
3. A lot of new parents have complained a lot of the books out there about parenting dictate to the reader instead of helping them, would you agree? I do agree. There are many books that seem to have a specific agenda and try to give parents the idea there is only one way to be a parent and if you don't do it their way you are doing something wrong. I've been practicing pediatrics long enough to have learned there are many ways to parent and different ways are needed depending on the family dynamic or each specific child. There isn't a cookie cutter child and we shouldn't expect that the same style parenting would work with them all.
4. You have three children, do you wish there was a book like yours around when you became a parent for the first time? Luckily I was a pediatrician by the time I became a parent so it probably wouldn't have helped that much, but I can tell you that becoming a parent definitely made me a better pediatrician.
5. When it comes to being a parent do you think men are as programmed as women in having the natural ability to know what to do? That's a great question and you would probably get a very different answer if you were to ask my wife. I actually think that both men and women have the ability to be great parents. Since I have been a pediatrician I have seen a huge shift in the amount of parenting done by fathers. With the amount of families who have both parents working I think it was a needed change. I do think that women and men do have different strengths that they are able to share with their children so I do think it is best when they get both sides of the equation.
6. A lot of men make excuses when it comes to changing a young baby nappy, why do you think that is?
Because it works, if I could get out of changing a smelly diaper I'd jump at the chance. It dates back to the time when moms did all the childcare and dads did all the working. Times have changed and many men have fought having
to change their roles.
7. You are a Pediatrician with 15 years experience, what is the funniest story you have come across with a new parent? The funniest story I've had is actually in the book. I had a parent ask me when it was OK for their baby to drink beer? When I told them babies shouldn't drink beer, why did they ask? Their reply was the toddler had gotten some of her daddy's beer and now was screaming to have more. I had a good laugh with that story.
8. What is the most common question a new parent asks? When will my baby sleep through the night? They are so tired after the first couple of days its about all they can think about.
9. How do you feel your new book will help new parents? I think it gives them all the information they need in a format they will actually be able to read and understand and not just sit on a shelf as a reference book.
10. For people who want to read your book, where can they purchase it from? Currently it is available on www.Amazon.com, www.Barnesandnoble.com, my website www.firsttimeparentssurvivalguide.com and any bookstore that has decided to carry it.
