The Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu has given a goahead for the IRCTC's pilot project of 'E-Bedroll'. This would allowpassengers to avail a bedroll kit by online booking. In addition a passenger can also avail this facility over the counter at selected IRCTC outlets at the stations.
The facility has been inaugurated at the New Delhi and Nizamuddin Stationon 10 February 2016. The facility was inaugurated remotely from his office through video conferencing. Same day it was also launched at Mumbai Central (BCT) and ChattarpatiShivaji Terminus (CSTM) stations. Previously it had also been inaugurated at Chennai Central and Thiruvananthapuram Station on 7 February 2016.The facility has been launched on a trial basis, at the major stations which have the maximum influx of passengers.
If a passenger wants to buy a fresh bedroll he can opt for this service.Under this facility passengers need to pay Rs 140 for twobed sheets and a pillow and Rs 110 for one blanket. The combo pack would cost Rs 250 which would include two sheets, one pillow and a blanket. The bedroll kit can be booked online on IRCTC e-ticketing site. The condition for availing this facility is that passenger should have a confirmed ticket at the time of purchase or can purchase four hours prior to the departure of the train.
The online booked bedroll is supplied in a sealed carry bag at the berth of the passenger by IRCTC during the time of journey. The facility is also available at the IRCTC counter at the stations where it can be purchased physically from the counter.
The major advantage of the bedroll scheme is its takeaway facility where passengers can take the bedding home for reuse. This instruction is clearly mentioned on the sealed carry bag. Currently bedrolls are provided only at AC classes for use and return, but this new facility would be available to both Sleeper and AC Class passengers.
This arrangement for sleeper class passengers to get a takeaway bedroll at a concessional rate has been widely welcomed. Besides if an AC Class passenger in interested in buying a fresh bedroll he can opt for the service. indian railways is also planning to introduce the bedroll purchase via Vending Machines.Evaluating the performance of the project this facility would be extended to moststations for the convenience of the travelling passengers. As a passenger friendly measure Indian Railways plans to upscale the facility.
