Burrito is a delicious Mexican food which is made of thin wheat bread that is used for wrapping a tasty filling. The authentic Mexican burrito will usually contain meat and refried beans as the filling. In the United States, however, along with refried beans and meat, lettuce, salsa, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, etc. are added. Hence Burritos are popularly known as a Tex-Mex Food.
The word burrito has its origin from Spanish. Burrito in Spanish means a little donkey. It is considered that it would have got its name because of the bed rolls and packs that were carried on donkeys in the olden times. This is a food that originated from the borders. Before the present day Burritos were developed, the Mexicans used corn tortillas to wrap the food, but after the introduction of wheat into Mexico, Mexicans found that wheat is more elastic than corn and started using the wheat flour instead of corn flour to make the tortillas for the burrito.
While Burrito is famous worldwide as a Mexican food and a wrap, there are wraps hailing from other countries similar to burritos, but the ingredients used for making the wraps and the fillings might vary a lot from country to country. Here are a list of some of the wraps around the world.
Banh Cuon – This is a dish from Northern Vietnam. Bamboo skewers (Kati) are used to roast the kebabs which are then wrapped in paratha or a whole wheat flat bread similar to the tortillas. The kebabs are usually marinated and roasted chicken or lamb which are then tossed with onion, chilies, and other aromatic spices before being wrapped in the paratha.
Borek – This is a type of a Turkish savory pastry. Its origin goes back to the Ottoman era and was a very popular Ottoman cuisine. The wrap is made from a phyllo dough, which forms a thin flaky dough which gives a light and crisp texture to it. The filling is made of vegetables, cheese, and/or lamb that have been flavored with traditional spices available in Turkey.
Popiah – This is a dish similar to spring roll and is very popular in Southern China (Fuji), Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. The Popiah has more ingredients in its filling compared to spring roll. The wrap or Popiah skin is made from a paper thin crepe made of wheat flour which is covered in a chilli sauce or sweet sauce. The filling includes a variety of julienned or shredded vegetables like carrots, turnip, cabbage, jicama, etc. Popiah can also include meat like chicken, shrimp, pork belly etc.
