Asia's largest and complete automotive show The Auto Expo started in the tear 1985 with a motto to provide a platform to the Indian automotive industry so that they can watch and learn about the new technologies developed by the world. Butnow, quarter century later things have changed drastically and now it provides a platform to Indian automotive industry to show the world its capability as a sourcing hub and globally invitation to automotive companies to launch itself in Indian markets. The debut showcasing of Auto expo 1986 was organized from 3-11 January at PragatiMaidan, New Delhi.
After the first Auto expo which was organized by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Society of Indian Automobile Manufactures (SIAM) and Automotive ComponentManufacturers Association of India (ACMA) it took 6 years to organize the second one. The next Auto expo was organized almost after 6 years in December and the soul reason behind it was that it was believed that Auto industry of India could not generate such a great revenue and was not big enough for a fair with such a great frequency.
Aptly inaugurated by amember of the team responsible for making the future of India happen, the then FinanceMinister, DrManmohan Singh. The objective was to invite collaborators, vendors, servicenetworks, dealers, the consumers and government to share Industry's vision. This was alsothe time when global players started entering India and 7 countries participated in all.
The third in the series, it became the biggest automotive show in South Asia. Auto Expo'96 also became the preferred launch platform for names like Daewoo, Ford, Hyundai, Honda etc. in Indian market. This was also the entry point for multinational automotive brands into India.
Auto Expo'98 was the next big thing to come up with a remarkable success. This event marked the launch of Tata Indica,Daewoo,Matiz and Hyundai Santro, Honda City etc. Many cars were launched in this year of Auto Expo and they can still be seen on the roads in good condition.Automobiles stole the limelight with a host of world class vehicle and new products launched by world manufacturers.
None of the event was criticized then. With further improvisation and increasing of facilities in the Auto Expo it was a huge platform for global automotive companies to showcase themselves. The 10 Auto Expo surpassed all records set in the earlier auto expos held since 1986, in terms of domestic as well as foreign participation, international delegations, general visitors, product launches, focused pavilions, orders booked, trade enquiries made, business visitors and glamour.
