There are many reasons why having a Coach is a good idea, but for the purposes of this article I will limit them to 7. I did originally think of 5 but another couple sprang to mind that I thought should be mentioned. Here they are - but in no particular order.
1. We all need someone to give us a push now and again. This is particularly important when we need to do something that we don't really want to do, or we feel uncomfortable with or nervous about. Our brains tell us not to do it and think of all the reasons why we shouldn't do it. That is not necessarily bad, it is just doing its job of protecting us. However, if you are to make changes in your life then these uncomfortable things need to be done and the sooner the better. The job of a Coach is to help you to accomplish these tasks by talking through your concerns, finding a way to overcome them and then helping you to achieve the outcome you desire.
2. A Coach will help you set action points each week or period so that you can take small, manageable steps. Although they may be small, they are steps in the right direction and will inevitably add up to a lot of steps that eventually get you to your goal.
3. Your Coach will help you to decide what your goal actually is. A lot of the time what we think we want is not necessarily what we really want. The job of a coach is to ascertain exactly what it is that you want to achieve so that he/she can help you to achieve it quicker and with less pain than if you were to try doing it alone.
4. How often do you procrastinate about things? Should you or shouldn't you do something, what will he/she think if you do it, how will you tell someone about what you are thinking about doing? All these things lead to indecision and the more indecisive you become the less likely you are to go ahead with your original plan. A Coach will help you get through this phase of procrastination and a good Coach will explain what is going on in your head and why you are confused or unsure of yourself.
5. A Coach will get you to do exercises to change the way you think so that you can get your subconscious to help you rather than hinder you in your efforts. It is amazing how a few simple changes to habits and beliefs can make all the difference as to whether or not we achieve our goals.
6. Have you ever thought about why you haven't already achieved your goal? What is it that gets in the way or makes it so difficult for you to achieve it? Your Coach will go through this with you and help you to overcome those obstacles.
7. Having a Coach means that you are accountable to someone. This makes a difference to us because having to explain to someone why you haven't done something is uncomfortable and, therefore, we are more likely to do the things we say than if we just tell ourselves that we will do them.
I consider these to be 7 great benefits of having a coach and I am sure you will agree that having someone to motivate you and encourage you is always better than having to struggle through alone.
