Photographs are treasured possessions of any individual. Everyone wants to look good on a photo. Portraits are photos of an individual and they speak a lot about the person. Hence it poses an ultimate challenge to both the photographer and the person posing for it.

TIPS TO POSE FOR A PORTRAIT

FACING THE CAMERA

Do not face square to the camera .This is because in a portrait the photographer cuts out the entire environment around you thereby, forcing you to take some extra space in the frame. You need to do a 2/3 turn away from the camera .This will give you a slimmer profile look.

CHIN

There is a tendency for people to tilt the head backwards, which should be avoided.  if you pose with your chin down, it would help to open your eyes up.

EYES

The eyes should be wide open but make sure you do not look scared. Avoid droopy eyelids or sleepy appearance. When you look to the side, you should make sure that you do not look away from the camera completely. This will make the white of your eyes more visible. Look to the right or left only slightly away from the centre.

EYEBROWS

As we all know eyebrows convey emotions therefore you ought to be careful. The eyebrows should be relaxed. It would help to keep the eyes closed for a while, before the shot so that you do not blink mid-shot.

SMILE

Smile enhances or mars the photograph.  Make sure that you do not have a fake smile on your face.It will ruin the picture. Sometimes people tend to smile with closed lips inorder to cover their yellowed or irregular dentition, you need to bare your teeth a bit to make your portrait look real. It would be even better if you could get someone to make you smile as the smile would be natural.

BODY

Good posture helps one to appear taller or thinner. Never slouch. It will be an added advantage to know your best feature so that you could guide the photographer to accentuate them. Always pose in diagonal lines. Avoid keeping your  legs ,arms, and torso directly vertical.

FOOT

Avoid keeping both the foot together pointing straight as this will stiffen your entire body. You will look uncomfortable. It would look better if you angle your foot at about 90 degrees. You could also try keeping one foot on ataller surface to create depth. Ladies are askedto put their weight on the backfoot while men are advised to shift their weight onto the front foot. Such a posture is said to
