Habits and routines can help you progress forward, or hold you back. How you begin your day is fundamental to your state of mind. Here are 5 morning routines that I use to ensure every day begins in a positive state.
1. Meditation. Morning meditation sets the tone for your entire day. It will help you be more focused, content, and optimistic. Your mind has a predisposition to jump from one thought to another. In Buddhism, this is referred to as "monkey mind." One benefit of meditation is being able to detach from habitual thought patterns, especially the negative ones. This can help you be in a compassionate, proactive state of being rather than a reactive one. Set aside at least 10 minutes a day first thing in the morning and be ready to face your day with clarity.
2. Get Your Neurons firing. Your morning routine will affect this process greatly. If you are a "snooze button" pro, your mind's routine will be slow. Fill your morning with stimulation for the brain and get those neurons firing. Add quick tempo, upbeat music to your morning. You neurons love to dance so let them go. I enjoy upbeat classical while I go through my morning. It gets my thought patterns in a positive state, and energizes my body. Try adding in different smells, your brain will associate all sorts of positivity with them. Instead of using an alarm, try setting the coffee maker to begin brewing at a preset time. Even if you don't drink coffee it can be a wonderful way to wake up. The point is to make the beginning of everyday an experience for your senses.
3. Waking up your body. Breakfast is still the most important meal of the day. It tells your body it's time to start working. A healthy breakfast improves your level of concentration, and your ability to retain information. It is also shown that people who eat a balanced breakfast are able to maintain a heathy body weight. Consider natural grains, fruits, and proteins low in cholesterol, saturated fats, and rich in vitamins.
4. Getting your mind in a state of Gratitude. During your morning routine begin to list the things you are grateful for that day. It will focus' your mind to look throughout your day for the wonders in life. You will rewire your mindset to a state of positivity and begin to help others do the same. This also will reduce the stress levels on your body and improve your overall health and quality of life.
5. Hold yourself to a high level of Achievement. Begin your day with the intent to do your best and achieve greatness. In the first waking moment, before sight, sound or smell, you are capable of anything. Then your "world" rushes in and your routines and patterns start. Having a great morning routine can be helpful, but it is not enough on its own. You must hold yourself accountable to your achievement. Keep a journal with what you are grateful for, and what you hope to accomplish that day, week, month, or year. Start out small and work your way up. You will train your mind to focus on that which aligns most with your passions, and begin to understand what your vision of success will look like.
Using great morning routines will get you positive and charged to go out and create your life of success. Remember that all change happens at many points in your life. First become the person you envision yourself being, and then the life you envision will form around you.
