Supreme Court Uphelds Kerala's liquor restriction policy (29.12.15).

As per top court, Kerala's share was 14.9% of the total consumption of Liquor in the Country, and people of Kerala consume alcohol worth Rs.30 crores per day (As Per Reports).

In order to curtail the above numbers, The Oomen Chandy led Congress government last year, has enacted a law, allowing only Five Star hotels to serve alcohol. This certainly didn't go well with the 1, 2, 3, & 4 star hotels. They callenged the state's decision citing that People can still buy alcohol from state run liquor shops and drink at home. Thus they moved to Supreme Court. Supreme Court on Tuesday (29.12.15) upheld the state's decision to practise liquor restriction. This came as a big shocker to liquor trader's who challenged the State's decision.  The whole move is aimed at gradually phasing out the liquor even from the state run liquor shops. This certainly, will improve the public health. Now, that liquor can be served only in Five star bars, which is very limited in number, about 27, thus putting the limit on liquor availability. This also increases the cost, which definitely will not go well with the Middle class, thereby forcing the middle class drinkers to quit drinking. This move, is certainly an example for other states to follow. Kerala is definitely putting out it's imprints in this social move. According to a press report: An average drinker in Kerala drinks about 8.3 Litres per year, which definitely is double that of National Average Consumption at 4.7 Litres per year. This move by Kerala government backed up by Supreme Court will definitely reduce these numbers in the forthcoming days promising a better future for Kerala.  As Mr. Kapil Sibal rightly said, people don't come to my state only to drink alcohol, it is otherwise also, a lovely place. The turn of fortunes from Liquor consumption state to tourism rich place is on the making. Now, State Run Liquor shops may sell alcohol, but the drinkers will be forced to drink at their home, which they will not prefer in front of Wives and Children's. Thus, this also acts as a checkpoint, forcing atleast some drinkers to quit the habit. Everything cannot be changed in one night, but change will happen gradually.

Then, as expected, these state run liquor shops will gradually stop its operation, making Kerala, a complete liquor free state justifying it's "God's Own Country" tag. Lets all pray for a better future for Kerala, and inturn to India.
