Homework, at times, becomes a matter of contention for every parent as they see their budding children struggle right in front of their eyes. The question that strikes on the mind is, "what the teachers are doing if my children have to learn all by themselves?" The question is almost legitimate, but parents miss the point that the child is actually repeating what is being taught at school and it is what studying means. However, some parents are not entirely wrong in accusing the school authorities for workloads carried to home by their children. The good school in gurgaon at Japan, Honk Kong and China dole out 6 to 4 hours of homework per week for 15 years old. It is also noted that Asian schools excel in academic performance than the average performance in western countries. Reports suggest that schools at Singapore and Honk Kong are at the top of the pyramid.

The issue that require attention is how to make homework most effective for students. The impact of homework depends on the age of students and the type of work they are entrusted. A study by Harris Cooper of Duke University has highlighted a 10-minute rule, which suggest that the time of homework is the grade of the child multiplied by 10. It results, 10 minutes for first graders, 60 minutes for 6th graders and up to 120 minutes or up to two hours for 12th graders. This rule is considered as a thumb rule for homework by most of the schools around the world including the good school in gurgaon.

Research has found no clear evidence of homework improving student's achievements, especially at elementary levels. In fact, the objective of homework for young children is not directed towards making them excel in studies, rather they are directed towards character building aspects of children such as discipline, following a routine and time management. The significance of homework increases proportionally with higher standards of students. In higher grades, comprising of middle and high school there is a positive correlation between marks at tests and homework.

Homework is effective when they reinforce what is being taught at classroom. Students need to repeat what they have learned at classroom. It is a proven fact that learning is consistent through regular and repetitive actions. Homework, therefore, is effective when it follows what is being taught at class before a day or even a week. Restricting homework to what is being taught at schools is the most effective idea. Introducing new materials to students on their own raise the complicacies.

Homework is an integral part of learning and it is crucial for students to keep in correlation with classroom learning and home study. However, it should not be cumbersome for students hampering their life besides the school.
