Okay, I opened my jewelry box, about 18 months ago, only to find that the rhinestones in my Guess watch had dulled. What? I was not only disappointed a the new 'this is a flea market watch' look but quite annoyed. I paid too much for this look. I adore Guess, anything Guess. The fact is, it was not the stones, it was the setting. When water and oil gets under the stone, that's it. Months later, I noticed that a few of the crystals in a Swarovski necklace had also dulled. Now, I was choked. The only way to restore the glitz was to send the pieces back to the respective manufacturer to have the stones replaced and the settings cleaned. An expensive solution, without a doubt. A cost that could quite easily have been avoided. I'm still thinking about having it done. Trying to glue in rhinestones myself just didn't cut it. Know what I mean? I just love both pieces. I don't know about you, but I feel fabulous when I wear a nice piece -- or two -- of jewelry. I guess I just feel posh. Cubic zirconia, rhinestone and crystals give the the luxurious look without the price. However, unlike diamonds, however, they need to be cared for differently. Diamonds and precious stones, inlaid into gold, silver or platinum, can withstand water, hairspray and body oils. In general, take the punishment. After all, a stone that can cut glass is a hardy stone, indeed. Never fear. There IS a way to keep your jewelry sparkling like the crystal waters of the Mediterranean sea. Take your jewelry off as soon as you get through the door.Never expose jewelry to household cleaning products, chlorine, swimming pools or hot tubs. Don't wear your bling to the beach. Looking fab in the sunshine can ruin the beauty of your jewelry.Whether you paid a little or a lot for your costume jewerly, always treat it with the same care as the real thing. To the naked eye, a good crystal or cubic zirconia is very hard to differentiat from a diamond. If you know of any products that help to restore or maintain the look of costume jewelry, please share!
