Situated about 110 kilometers from the city of Ahmedabad and close to the Gulf of Khambhat, Dholera SIR has finally seen the light of the day when it was selected as the first smart city of India on which the development work has already begun.

It boasts of excellent connectivity through all means of transport which includes a suburban metro link between Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad and Dholera, a Rail Based Multi Modal Freight Logistics Park across the DMIC, six lane expressway connecting Dholera to Bhavnagar and an international airport connecting the Special Investment Region to important cities across globe.

A Greenfield port has been proposed near Dholera owing to its proximity to the Gulf of Khambhat. Currently, goods that are shifted from Delhi travel all the way to Mumbai and are exported from the Mumbai Port. However after development of Dholera port the distance can be cut short significantly and the Dholera can serve as an important exit route for such goods being exported. An estimate has been drawn that the goods shall travel almost 400 kilometers less via the new route as compared to the older one. Besides, the port shall also facilitate export of automobiles and auto components.

A four lane highway with the structure of a six lane expressway is also under construction and shall connect the important cities of Gujarat to Dholera also enhancing the speed of transit thus saving time and making it cost efficient. The expressway shall connect Dholera to Ahmedabad on one side and Bhavnagar port on other end and is a part of the master plan submitted to the government for the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial corridor road connectivity. This road is expected to act as a catalyst for industrial development in this region by making Dholera and surrounding industries easily accessible. The ease in accessibility shall attract many conglomerates to set up their businesses in the Dholera Smart City or first smart city of India. The expressway shall cover a stretch of 153 kilometers and is estimated to cost Rs. 900.39 crores approximately.

An international airport development 20 kilometers away from Dholera has recently been approved by the civil aviation authority. This is a much needed feature that shall make Dholera comparable to the important cities of the world by being globally connected. The air traffic in Gujarat is on constant expansion and the existing airport of Ahmedabad shall soon get saturated by 2020. The Dholera International Airport is situated about 80 kilometers from Ahmedabad and share the air traffic burden for the city. It is being built on 1700 hectares of land and is ideally placed vis-à-vis the cities like Nadiyad, Bhavnagar, Vadodara and Rajkot.

A high speed metro railway shall also connect Dholera to Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. It shall cover 100 kilometers, part of which shall be elevated which is important for the development of international airport. Possibility of extending the metro route to GIFT city is also being considered by the Ministry of Railways.

Dholera is indeed going to be one of the most well connected smart city that shall further boost its development and surge the economic activities in the region.
